Swamp Angel

Taller than Paul Bunyan and stronger than his blue ox Babe, Angelica Longrider is the only one who can save Tennessee from Thundering Tarnation, a massive black bear! Swamp Angel, a classically illustrated, folktale style story written by Annie Isaacs and illustrated by Paul O. Zelinsky, was a Caldecott Honor book in 1995 and is a wonderful introduction to the folklore of the plains.

Swamp Angel can be introduced as part of a history, geography, or literature unit about Tenessee or folklore.
