The Farewell Symphony

The prince requires the presence of his orchestra at his summer palace, but he will not allow them to bring their families. The orchestra, led by Joseph Haydn, is sad and restless but Prince Nicholas will not listen to their pleas to be allowed to return home! Haydn must find a creative way to communicate with the prince, and he realizes that music may be the key.

The Farewell Symphony written by Anna Harwell Celenza and illustrated by JoAnn E. Kitchel allows students to see the power that music can have! A touching introduction to music appreciation, after reading this novel students could listen to Haydn’s symphony and hear the emotion! On  more basic level, classes could discuss questions like: What is emotion?   How can we know what other people are feeling? What do people look like when they feel happy, sad, angry, etc?
